The 2016 Payments Predictions

  • Apple Pay will fail gain real volume, either in the UK of the US, while others such as Samsung Pay and Android Pay will gain traction, albeit from a small base
  • We will continue to see the trend towards 'open' rather than closed-systems, networks, APIs, strategy - and this will be critical to their success
  • UnionPay will expand its business with more issuers in more markets. But Visa and MasterCard make little headway internationally
  • The more progressive retailers will start to engage with the payments industry as a source of solutions rather than inconvenience
  • Companies will start to think seriously about PSD2, but still not grasp the opportunities that it opens up
  • There will be further consolidation in the support market
  • More niche closed-loop wallets will launch, claim they are the next big think and then disappear

The event has been very, very good, with strong representation across multiple industries. The highlight for me has been meeting suppliers who have differing solutions and expertise. I have done plenty of networking. It’s overall worth visiting.
